“Why would people cry about this?” a student asked at one point; whispers circulated in my classroom and heads turned towards where I stood as we watched the inauguration today, tears running down my face.
I didn’t think I could explain it succinctly, and so said nothing.

Your students don't remember Clinton, do they? Perhaps they took the last eight years as par for the course, a typical presidency. Maybe they're too young to know how desperately this country needed a leader! And then we get a thoughtful, intelligent, wise, compassionate one! I explain my tears this way: RELIEF. HOPE. JOY.
